Human Hair Extensions Care

Preparation:

Most human hairpieces should be washed and conditioned before application to remove any residue left from the manufacturing process. In addition, check the weft (for weaving hair) for any unusual gaps or looseness. With wefted hairpieces, hair is doubled over and then sewn onto the weft. Therefore silkier and straighter styles have a tendency to slip out. Reinforce the weft by sewing through the loose areas or by applying a waterproof adhesive (i.e. bonding glue) on the weft. This eliminates any shedding problems that might occur.

General Care:

The following are genral care recommendations. Your stylist can tailor to suit the needs and the specific human hair weave or weave procedure that you are having done.

Hair should be shampooed and conditioned regularly with oil free products. Dirt, hair oils, and styling products, can tangle and mat your own hair. Although the cleanliness of the hair extensions will prolong its use, you should not clean it to frequently. Excessive use of styling products and heat should also be avoided. These are elements that will shorten the ”°life”± of the hair extension. You should also regularly condition your own hair underneath to prevent any damage to your own hair.

The hair extensions should be gently detangled using a wide tooth comb everyday and before going to bed. Even more importantly, hair must be detangled before it is washed. Applying conditioner to your dry hair will speed up the detangling process.

Never rub or massage the hair extension while washing; the shampoo water should just run through the hair. If towel drying, gently squeeze out excess water and blot with a towel. Do not rub or roll the hair in the towel.

When detangling dry hair each day, water should not be used alone on the extension. A solution of water and conditioner in a spray bottle is an inexpensive way to make your own detangling solution. Otherwise, a good detangling solution that is applied before detangling the hair.

If curling or blow-drying the extension, avoid any area where heat sensitive adhesives have been used to affix the extensions. Also, when blow driving curly hair, we recommend the use of a diffuser.

Dry hair thoroughly before going to bed. Long extensions should be braided into one big braid long and short extensions should always wrapped in a scarf to prevent tangling and to maintain style. A satin pillowcase is also helpful in preventing tangles.

Matching Hair Color:

Natural hair color is actually composed of many colors rather than the mono-toned color the eye may see. If your hair color is other then black and dark brown it might be more difficult to match with a solid tone extension. This can be solved in a number of ways:

  • The easiest solution is to blend two or more colors to match your own hair color. This is probably the safest method to use to match color or add contrast.
  • Another solution is to dye your hair to match the color of the extensions.
  • If you want to avoid a chemical process, then the extension itself can be dyed to match your hair. This practice is  generaly discuraged by most human hair manufactuers as the hair piece has already been processed. However, if the hair extensions must be colored, dye the extensions by depositing color from lighter to a darker color. A strand test should always be preformed before the whole hairpiece is dyed.
